Cosmetic surgery can be a difficult process to undergo. “From filtering through the latest new procedures to finding the right doctor, there is a lot to consider that can ultimately impact the end result of cosmetic surgery,” said New Jersey plastic surgeon
Dr. Michael Rose of The Plastic Surgery Center, who today unveiled tips on how to maximize cosmetic surgery results. “Patients will always benefit in the end by doing their research and making an informed decision that will best meet their needs.”
To follow are The Plastic Surgery Center’s tips on how to maximize cosmetic surgery results:
Select a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon – Only consider a surgeon who is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Avoid fancy-sounding “societies” and “fellowships,” as it could indicate the doctor is NOT a plastic surgeon and only attended a brief course on how to perform a certain procedure.
Don’t rely on the Internet for information – There is as much wrong information as accurate information out there. The Internet is a good starting point, but should not be the last word.
Check references – Ask around to verify the reputation of the doctor and the medical practice before making a commitment.
Set reasonable expectations for results – Reality TV shows typically supplement surgeries with six months of working out with a trainer, a dental makeover, and professional hair, makeup and clothing consultations.
Get a second opinion – Do not hesitate to get a second opinion, but recognize that no two surgeons will approach your problems in the exact same way. Go with the approach that you are most comfortable with.
Avoid “quick fix” procedures – Treatments advertised as a “quick fix” may seem like a good idea, but usually require regular maintenance and end up costing more in the long term. Opt for tried-and-true methods that achieve lasting results instead.
Beware the latest “it” technique – Just because a procedure is touted as the hottest new thing, does not always mean it is better. Choose a safe, reliable method until further testing proves the new one is worth the hype.
Be smart about timing – If considering multiple procedures, wait until you can afford to get ALL of them at once. This way, you will pay for surgery costs (e.g. facility fees, anesthesia, consultations) and be out of commission only one time.
Communicate with your doctor – Clearly explain your goals and expectations and be honest about your health and habits (i.e. smoking). Then you and your doctor can determine the best option.
Talk to your health insurance provider – Some things that border between cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery (i.e. a breast reduction) could be covered by your insurance company. The possible savings are worth a quick phone call to learn what is covered.
